Section III:

Investing Your 401k or IRA Money

Review

Section I hopefully provided you with an overview of the wealth building process, and introduced you to the basics of creating a financial master plan.

Section II introduced you to the basic principles for investing that you'll be putting to use when you set up your retirement account in this section and your regular money account in Section IV.

You've learned about the secret to wealth (paying yourself first) and about the power of compound returns. And you've gained an understanding of risk as it applies to a long-term investment program utilizing widely diversified common stock funds and dollar cost averaging.

Now it's time to put the basic principles to work in your own two accumulation programs, and you should begin by putting your company 401k account in order, which is the focus of Part A of this section.

If you don't have a 401k available to you at work, you'll want to read Lesson 1 of Part B of this section which deals with using a self-directed IRA as a 401k alternative.

Even if you presently have a 401k, you'll want to read Lesson 2 of Section III-B which deals with rolling 401k money into an IRA at a future date should you change jobs or retire. Almost everyone will sooner or later need to have an IRA for one or both of these purposes.
