Laval E. Robillard - Author Bio

Laval E. Robillard, a graduate of Harvard ’53, magna cum laude, has been an investment advisor since 1962. He recently retired from Tradestar Investments, Inc. where he was Senior Vice President for Special Products and Retirement Planning, to become an independent author, publisher, and consultant.

During his long and varied career in the securities business, Mr. Robillard earned national recognition for his expertise with mutual funds and other packaged products, while managing departments for Fidelity Investments and others, and conducting seminars, lectures, and training classes all over the country for clients as well as fellow investment professionals. He is an eight time elected member of Nuveen’s prestigious Advisory Council, and a long time member of the National Unit Trust Association.

With the advent of widely diversified no-load mutual funds, and particularly the S&P 500 Index funds, Mr. Robillard became first a student, and later an avid proponent of what is now called “the efficient market theory” or “modern portfolio theory.”

This theory establishes that passive investors, such as owners of broadly diversified market index funds, holding all stocks forever, will do as well or better than active investors who are buying and selling stocks in an effort to outperform the market. Robillard determined that not only could such investors accumulate more wealth, but also that they could do so more safely, surely and steadily than their more adventuresome counterparts.

To Robillard, this meant that a simple strategy could be developed, utilizing index funds in conjunction with a regular and automatic savings plan, that could put absolutely anybody on the road to financial independence, without the need for much financial education, and without the need for expensive professional help.

He first expressed the basics of this strategy in a little booklet/report entitled Power Investing Your 401k, How To Maximize Your Plan, which was distributed primarily through corporate benefits departments to plan participants. He also created a companion website for the booklet.

Subsequent to the publication of this booklet, Robillard further refined this investment approach, named it the Simple Strategy, and expanded its application beyond one’s 401(k) plan to one’s entire wealth accumulation program. This project developed into this book, Financial Independence 101, A Simple Strategy For Building Wealth,  and into an educational website, www.financialindependence101.com .

Mr. Robillard lives in Houston, Texas with his wife Liz. The couple has four grown children and seven grandchildren.
