Early money earns the most. 5) Set your contribution high enough to capture the maximum company match. 6) Select the most widely diversified common stock fund offered by your plan as your investment. 7) Allocate 100% of your contribution to this selection. Splitting your investment will only dilute your return. 8) Do not tinker with your plan in any way after setting things up. Do not vary your contribution or switch back and forth between investments. Leave well enough alone. 9) A typical Vanguard 401k menu of mutual funds is discussed. 10) A typical Fidelity 401k menu of mutual funds is discussed. 11) You can take withdrawals and loans if you really need the money. 12) You should move your money to an IRA when you leave.
